First thing I noticed was how the bolt on the top is bent... that tells me that the other side let go first, and put a strain on that bolt at an angle. Probably the only reason why that one didn't break is because the threads stripped first, loosening the nut and allowing the rod to fall off. If the top was the side that loosened first (from a loose nut), then the bottom side would be bent at an angle from the stress put on it. So I think that both nuts were probably on just fine, and for one reason or another the bottom bolt failed, causing all the stress to fall on the top bolt and eventually stripping the nut and causing it to fall off. I'm sorry to hear about your engine, the car's looking good and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before you get all this stuff worked out.
